Good and Bad Writing

Examples of Bad Writing

The first piece of writing gets 'hyped up", using phrases such as "Ethical Relativism is of a mind to say". People do not speak like this in normal conversation which makes it hard for the reader to understand what the author is trying to say. The author also tends to ramble on by using run-on sentences. Furthermore, this piece has absolutely no direction. The author is trying to convey too many opinions and ideas at once, which all the while confuses the reader. They begin by defining ethical relativism and close their piece still attempting to define the term. This would suggest that the author did not have a set direction or was unsure of what they were trying to convey.

The second piece it is "too clever by half". The author is using run-on sentences which are inflated, an attempt to make a simple message appear more complex and intelligent.

The third piece of writing jumps to conclusions without providing any supporting evidence. The author ignores the reader, making it difficult for the reader to trust the author. No valid references are provided to support the claims made and no clear relations can be drawn.

Examples of Good Writing

The first piece is such because it is concise and to the point and not overstated, providing only relevant information valid to the reader's understanding of the proposed topic.

The second piece of good writing keeps the reader's attention by providing quotations to further emphasize the author's perspective. The author is also able to make valid and insightful connections and draw conclusions from the quotations given.

The third piece of writing is so because the author suggests an interesting claim. The author keeps the piece precise, descriptive, informative and exciting without "hyping up", being too wordy or losing the reader's focus.

Good succinct comments, but you need to be sure to quote examples from the sources to let the samples indict themselves -- good or bad. On the whole, a good start.
